It’s probably true to say that we were all a bit nervous; would anybody turn up, would they ask questions the surgeons couldn’t answer, would we be able to cope with numbers? As it transpired, it was a relatively quiet and calm start to what we hope will become a regular fixture, we had just about enough surgeons to cover all the patients who arrived on a one-to-one basis, there was a bit of “team-surgeoning”, and myself (John Popham) and Phil Kirby were able to float around on the sidelines helping out as and when required.  Mike Chitty, who is recovering from illness, also dropped in for a while, managing to complete the feat of being in two places at once, and we hope he will be joining us as a fully-fledged surgeon in the future.

On a fairly filthy night, we were heartened by the numbers of people who were able to join us at the Round Foundry, and the surgeons were kept busy throughout the evening. I made a point of speaking to everyone as they were leaving and, without exception, they were pleased with their first Social Media Surgery experience, and all said they would come again. Which is a key part of the objective, really, Social Media Surgeries seem to work best as informal events, and we made it clear that it was a learning experience as much for the “surgeons” as for the “patients”. We always thought it unlikely that we would come up with the definitive answer to all of the “patients’” issues on the first sitting, and we envisage that relationships will develop as the months progress.

Many thanks to the “Surgeons”: Monica Tailor, Sarah Hartley, Kate Brown, Lee Hicken, and Kevin Campbell-Wright. And an enormous vote of thanks to Sharon and the staff of the Round Foundry for making us so welcome and organising the venue for us.

At the surgery you’ll get chance to sit down and have a cup of tea with someone who understands about web sites and tell them about your group or organisation and what you do. This will be the starting point.

Then you’ll be able to look at the kinds of web sites and services that you might find helpful, and see what similar groups are doing. You can choose some services to try out, and even set up a web site there and then if you feel you need some help getting started.

There will be more events in 2010 when you can come back and tell people how you got on, and look for more ideas and advice. Support for beginners will be available between the events.

Leeds Social Media Surgery welcomes people with all levels of web and internet skills – from beginners to people with experience who are looking for new ideas or alternatives for their group or organisation.

You don’t have to be based in Leeds to come along, the session is open to anyone who thinks it will be useful.

The first Leeds Social Media Surgery will be at the Round Foundry Media Centre on Foundry Street in Holbeck Urban Village (see http://www.roundfoundry.net/Contact/)  on Tuesday 10th November from 5.30pm to 7pm. You can drop in any time for free advice.

The Round Foundry will also be laying on free tea, coffee and biscuits.

These free advice sessions are being organised by Leeds Social Media, a group of local volunteers who are committed to using all forms of media technology to connect people so that they can get things done for themselves in their neighbourhoods.
